A partition - based approach towards constructingGalois ( concept )

Galois lattices and formal concept analysis of binary relations have proved useful in the resolution of many problems of theoretical or practical interest. Recent studies of practical applications in data mining and software engineering have put the emphasis on the need for both eecient and exible algorithms to construct the lattice. Our paper presents a novel approach for lattice construction based on the apposition of binary relation fragments. We extend the existing theory to a complete characterization of the global Galois (concept) lattice as a substructure of the direct product of the lattices related to fragments. The structural properties underlie a procedure for extracting the global lattice from the direct product, which is the basis for a full-scale lattice construction algorithm implementing a divide-and-conquer strategy. The paper provides a complexity analysis of the algorithm together with some results about its practical performance and describes a class of binary relations for which the algorithm outperforms the most eecient lattice-constructing methods. Les treillis de Galois et l'analyse formelle des concepts de relations binaires ont d emontr e leur utilit e dans la r esolution de nombreux probl emes d'ordre th eorique ou pratique. Les applications les plus r ecentes, notamment en fouille de donn ees et en g enie logiciel, ont mis en evidence le besoin d'algorithmes eecaces et exibles pour la construction de treillis. Dans cet article, nous pr esentons une approche originale pour la construction de treillis qui repose sur l'apposition de fragments de relations binaires. Nous compl etons la th eorie sous-jacente par la formulation d'une caract erisation compl ete du treillis de Galois (concepts) en tant que sous-structure du produit direct des treillis correspondant aux fragments. Ce r esultat est utilis e dans la d eenition d'une proc edure construisant le treillis de Galois global a partir du produit direct, qui constitue le fondement d'une strat egie compl ete de construction de treillis de type \diviser pour r egner". Nous etudions la complexit e asymptotique du nouvel algorithme et fournissons des r esultats concernant ses performances pratiques. L'article d ecrit egalement une classe de relations binaires pour lesquels notre m ethode se montre plus performante que le reste des algorithmes connus.
